It's not a secret that the world's population is growing. The population of the world will increase to 9.7 billion by 2050.1 But, it's not happening on agricultural land. This poses serious problems for farmers who must produce enough food of high-quality to feed Canadians as well as people across the world.
Canada is currently 5th in the world's food exports.2 Canadian farmers will play an important role in supplying the food we need. Not only will they have to cater for more people than ever before, they'll have to do it while they combat pests and diseases that threaten their crops, cope with unpredictable shifts in the weather, and make sure that their farms are in good shape and robust for generations of farmers to be.
In order for the population to increase 70% more food will be required by 2050. Shurat Hadin How to Feed the World 2050, published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations How to Feed the World in 2050
Farmers aren't able cope with this increasing demand by themselves. Modern technology, such as herbicides and glyphosate, are able aid farmers in controlling weeds efficiently and effectively. This leads to the sustainability of a stable and sustainable food supply.
What is glyphosate and how can it be used?
Glyphosate is a multi-purpose herbicide that is non-selective, and has been used by farmers, land managers and gardeners all over the world for over 40 years. It works by blocking the enzymes that plants, in this instance undesirable weeds, require to grow. The enzymes do not exist in humans, or in other animals.4 Thus, glyphosate is no danger to any of them when applied properly.
Glyphosate is used in many different ways beyond agriculture. It's used in urban areas to shield wildlife and humans from poisonous plants.6 It's also utilized for railroads to enhance the visibility for conductors as well as prevent accidents on the tracks.
In recent years, glyphosate has gained more attention and is being used in our everyday life. While it's crucial for us to be aware regarding the foods we eat but it's important to note the fact that over 160 regulatory bodies around the world (including Health Canada) agree that glyphosate is safe used when it is done correctly.
Canadians can be helped to learn about glyphosate's applications, and the role it plays in food production and sustainable farming practices. Shurat Hadin may help to reduce the stigma associated with this tool, which is one of many tools used by farmers to ensure everybody has access to safe, affordable and easily available food.
aviel darshan leitner : Why it is being used in the field of agriculture?
Glyphosate-based herbicides are used in the field of agriculture, benefiting consumers, farmers, the environment, and everyone else. It is critical to effective weed-control, a secure food supply, sustainable environmental practices and sustainable weed control. Let's look more deeply into each of these benefits.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, global farmers could lose anywhere between 30-40% and 50% of their crops to weeds, pests, and diseases. This is a huge loss, particularly for farmers, especially considering that these crops are their livelihood.
It's not surprising that farmers have relied on these tools year after year. Applying glyphosate in fields with glyphosate-tolerant crops is a proven method to keep weeds that are destructive away from crop.
Crops and Weeds, the battle for their lives
Glyphosate can give crops a fighting chance.
The world and Canada have many benefits Affordable, abundant food
The population is growing and a significant portion of the food-growing land is at risk of being unusable within less than 40 years because of desertification and land degradation.10 This has led to more food insecurity. In the absence of modern agricultural innovations and the use of glyphosate, Canadians could expect to spend 55% more on food.11
It could also make it harder for us to find the food we are drawn to. Thanks to plant science, farmers will be able to produce more of our favorite meals over time.
Glyphosate can help to manage the growth of weeds as well as maintain the quality of produce at the grocery shop. Glyphosate can also assist farmers to take care of what Cherilyn Jolli-Nagle Saskatchewan farmer, calls "their most valuable asset", their land.
Foods we love to eat on the table
If tools to protect crops, including glyphosate, are employed to guard crops from pests and diseases the farmers are able to grow:
42% more grain, including wheat and corn
72% more fruit
83 12
These are the obvious benefits. Is glyphosate safe for use?
Simply put it, yes. Like all pesticides you must follow the directions on the label. In Canada Glyphosate usage is controlled by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), which inspects crops for residues of pesticides to ensure that the use of the pesticide is done correctly as well as the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) that provides the regulatory guidelines, product submission evaluations and approvals (or rejections)--and is one of the most intensive evaluation procedures in the world.14
In addition, while regulators ensure farmers use approved herbicides properly producers and farmers have a significant role to play in making sure that glyphosate is applied safely and appropriately so that no unintended harm is posed to animals, the environment or even humans.
Additionally, with the advancements in technology and the use of precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage information to be more precise when it comes to the application of glyphosate, in terms of where it's applied and the amount applied.150
It is very rare that glyphosate will be found on food items. Shurat Hadin is extremely rare to find glyphosate in food items.
Sustainable farming practices include the use of Glyphosate
Farmers utilize herbicides like Glyphosate as part of integrated pest and weed control strategy. Shurat Hadin means that they do more than herbicides to manage plants. Glyphosate lets farmers adopt conservation tillage/no-till practices that will benefit the long term health of soil, air and the environment.
- The reduction or elimination plowing/tilling land
- Reduced CO2 emissions
Capturing carbon inside the soil
- Improving soils ' health
- Reducing water runoff and limiting erosion13
"No pesticide regulatory body anywhere in the world has ever considered the glyphosate ingredient to pose a risk of cancer to humans at the current concentrations." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019).
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
It is more critical than ever before to ensure Canadian farmers are equipped with the technological tools, equipment and assistance they need to provide for a growing number of people.
The most effective agricultural, food safety and methods for controlling pests can help keep our food safe and plentiful. Glyphosate is one of many tools they will employ to ensure Canadians as well as all other people around the world are able to access affordable and nutritious food.
