You need to winter-proof your house. You have to make sure you switch of the master circuit breaker or the shut-off valve before you leave your house. Since one small hole or congested water can quickly freeze and cause pipes to break and expand, you need to drain and open all outdoor and household water lines.

You should put a strainer over your drains to catch anything that could clog your drain up. You should clean your strainer in your kitchen anytime you have anything in it. Those in the bathtub should be cleaned out periodically, as needed.

Do not ignore a slow flushing toilet. This is usually a sign that something is wrong. It can also cause backups and overflows. The most common causes of a slow flushing toilet are sediment build up, tank malfunctions, or partial clogs. You should periodically check for these problems.

If water is not coming to the dishwasher, you most likely have a blockage somewhere. You will need to turn off the water supply and remove the hose that leads to the dishwasher. After securing the hose, turn the water back on. See if it feeds into a bowl. If not, then you must find the block where it is at which may include removing more piping.

It is not always necessary to call in a plumber when you have a damaged section of pipe in your plumbing. There are repair kits you can buy in your local hardware store which are excellent in repairing leaks. If you have a small leak, you can rub a compound stick over the hole or crack in the pipe to seal it shut. Epoxy paste is also an excellent remedy for a leaking pipes. Make sure you turn off the water and completely dry the pipe before applying the epoxy.

To avoid freezing pipes in the winter, make sure to insulate any exposed pipes in you basement before winter comes. Pay extra attention to pipes near the outside walls. If you have had a problem with any particular pipe freezing in the past, apply some heat tape to insulate those pipes.

Teach kids how to shut off the toilet's water supply. Kids are notorious for putting large wads of toilet paper and other things into the toilet, which inevitably leads to the toilet overflowing. Especially if your bathroom has carpet, show kids how to turn the water valve off if the toilet water keeps rising, to prevent the mess of an overflow.

Try to limit the amount of hair that goes down your drains. Hair can become tangled up in the pipe and end up blocking up the them, preventing water from flowing smoothly. Buy a cheap screened drain cover to put over your drain to stop any hair from going down and clean it off regularly.

Try to update your internal toilet components from time to time. If you have to hold down the handle for a long time to flush your toilet, you may need to replace a worn piece. This improvement will help to save a lot of money on your water bill during the year.

If you think you understand what is wrong with your toilet, but aren't sure, you should first do some more research on the internet. Most plumbing problems are fairly standard, and you should be able to read about the problem in great detail on several amateur plumber forums to make sure you understand the problem.

Clean washing machine lint traps and use pantyhose over the water outlet tube to prevent lint, fuzz and other debris from clogging sewer or septic system filters. Fine mesh traps are also available for this purpose, but a package of knee-high nylon stockings and plastic ties can provide enough filters to encourage you to do the job regularly.

If your washing machine's drain stack overflows, snake it with a regular pipe snake. On occasion, you will find that small items and lint from your washing machine could be built up in the washing machine pipe, which could cause clogging or back up.

If you are looking for a plumbing contractor, take some time to check with the Department of Consumer Affairs. By doing this you can see if they have any problems with their license and heck on reviews about the quality of their work. Do not hire a plumber with a license that is not in good standing.

To check for toilet leaks, especially if it seems like your toilet is chronically running, use a few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank. If water is leaking into the bowl, you will see color in about a half hour. Replacing tank parts can repair leaks and greatly save on water consumption.

Water should never accumulate around your water heating unit. If it does, there is a leak and you should turn off the water to the unit immediately. If you don't, a small leak can turn into a much larger leak, making it harder to shut off.

If you have plumbing that runs into your refrigerator, you should be sure to shut it off if you are leaving on vacation. You do not want a leak to develop while you are away and leak all over your home. It will only take a minute to avoid what can be a disastrous situation.

Every so often you should check your toilet for leaks. A good way to check for leaks would be to put food coloring, Kool-Aid, or even coffee in the tank, anything that will color the water will work. You should check your toilet bowl in a little bit, and if there is color in the bowl, your toilet is leaking and the stopper and/or flush valve may need changed.

A Vancouver Island plumbing company has found a unique way to give back to veterans: giving thanks by giving tanks.


Every Remembrance Day, Wade Roberts Plumbing holds a draw and selects three former members of the Canadian Forces to receive free hot water tanks, and each tank has a story.


Zack Jilg is a plumber and gas fitter for the company, and he was one of the driving forces behind the idea.


Jilg's best friend, Private Chadwick James Horn, was killed in Afghanistan in September 2008. Each of the free hot water tanks the company installs also comes with a plaque honouring the memory of a fallen Canadian soldier.
