Let me share with you an excursion I made last year on a boat that traversed the Arctic. It sounded amazing, National Geographic journey thru the ice, then back with polar bears, and many other animals. There was going to be ice everywhere, snow everywhere. Man-made tools were used to defeat the elements and get through the frozen landscape of the northern wilderness. It sounded like an epic task, an epic battle with the north, the weather, the pole.
I was told to take every gadget that could be transported inside my bag. I did pack my laptop, however, I added a large display screen to expand the work space. The electricity was no problem. The idea of an experiment - was somewhat unknown to me.. I was unaware that I would be disconnected from my internet two days into my 14-day journey and disappear from the Earth for the following 10 days. When it happened I was shocked. Every travel, however far or difficult, should cause a disconnect from technology. Not just do I have an unfinished business, but I was also not prepared for it.
Nowadays, people don't care if they have to be offline. Internet is all over the world. If your home Internet connection fails, you can always go to a nearby McDonald's and get the free WiFi connection you're looking for. Bring your laptops and settle in the cafe at Starbucks for the rest of your life, occupy a table there and just surf the Internet to the fullest extent you wish. However, no restaurant or cafe will help further north, and a few hours from the closest shack with the electricity generated by an ineffective generator.. There's not a free Internet. There are two optionsto choose from: go offline or use satellite access.
I cannot afford the cost of a satellite phone. It's expensive particularly for Internet access. But , next time, I'll prepare an avid collection of audio and video before I head out to the world without Internet. Last time I had only 2 songs. The songs were downloaded in the day so all I could listen to was three jazz songs and a song I had no idea the name of. This is it. 4 songs for 2 weeks of no-things. If I knew that this was likely to be the case, I would have prepared. I would have loaded my laptop with TV shows, and music videos. My favourite podcasts were ones I would listen to for hours. It's easy to download them, then convert them into MP3 format and save them to my laptop. I then simply lay in my room and listen to everything I like to listen to while at home, yet I I rarely get time to do so. That could have been my gold hour, or two weeks worth of gold. However, it turned out to be two weeks of looking at the ceiling and trying to catch passengers every time there was a noise from the corridors.
The trip was devoid both literally and metaphorically. Never have I been so bored. I knew the problem would eventually arise from the thick ice, so the boat had turn around and be pulled back to civilization. While this isn't surprising however, there were plenty of alternatives. Hours and hours of idle time could be spent listening to podcasts and DIY videos on fixing issues at home, or simply listening to music. The next time, I'll convert Youtube videos from mp4 format to MP3 format using my laptop. Bring them with you and listen to your most loved music right on your laptop. https://ytmp3.wtf/ Music can boost your mood. Hulu, Netflix and other apps allow you to download your favorite shows and movies to stream offline. It is also possible to take these with you during long journeys in the Arctic. Be sure to not spend your time sat in a boring place. Have fun!
