In regard of my case in suspect of academic dishonesty on CS3103 Programming Assignment #2, please consider my explanation below.
I would regard the cause of this case as “serious careless mistake” as I believe my group has mixed up the source code file with another group’s work during submission (i.e. submitted the wrong file). I will further describe the case and issues related in the following paragraphs.
I was working overnight with my group mate, Chow Sik Yuet, on the programming assignment #2 the night before deadline. Eddy Tang Wing Fai, who was also a student of the class of CS3103, approached me on phone call and asked me to help him test the program of his group, as he claimed both he and his group mate were unable to connect to the testing server. Given the server had been down for some time before (which had made the submission deadline postponed), I thought the situation was possible and therefore helped him to test the program on the server. He sent me their program through Facebook conversation and I sent him back the test result after compilation. I have attached with the conversation record which verifies the above incident for your consideration.
The above explains the reason that I was having the work of Eddy’s group. We had produced our own piece of work and I believe it was mistakenly mixed up with Eddy’s work. It was a serious human error as we were too tired and had lost concentration after we finished our work. In fact, the content of the pseudo code in the assignment report does not match with the source code we submitted, which could serve as evidence that the program code we submitted were not the one we intended to submit. I have attached the program code of my group, a screenshot showing the last modified time and an analysis of my above claim in this email for your consideration.
As a year 3 student, I understand that there is similarity check on the assignments we submitted to canvas and I also understand that plagiarism is a serious offence to academic dishonesty which could lead to termination of study. It is unreasonable to hand in a work that is identical to another submission. Also, as mentioned above, the content of the report does not match with the suspected source code. The only explanation to this is that we have submitted the wrong file and we should have taken better care on that. I sincerely hope you can consider our explanation valid and I apologize for the inconvenience this issue has cause to all of you.
