Are you planning to go on a long trip far from home? It is important to have all the digital materials you require before the WiFi ceases to function.
Let me tell you about my trip last year on a boat that traversed the Arctic. It sounded great, National Geographic trip thru the ice and back with polar bears and numerous other species. There would be the ice everywhere, and snow all around. Man-made tools were used to defeat the elements and move through the frozen wilderness of the northern wilderness. It sounded amazing, like an epic fight against the weather north and the pole.

I was told to take any technology that can be carried inside my bag. I was able to fit my laptop, as well as an enormous screen to extend my work area. The electricity was not a problem according to the information they gave me. What was to become the first test was somewhat unknown to me.. I was unaware that only two days into the 14-day trial and my Internet connection would go down and I would lose internet access for the next 10 consecutive days. It happened. I was devastated. I was stunned that any trip, no matter how difficult or distant, would cause a sudden disconnect from the technology world. Not even in 21st Century. Not only do I have unfinished business and I'm not prepared for it.

If your internet connection becomes intermittently slow, you will be able to find a McDonalds near you and connect to their free WiFi. You can bring your laptop to the nearest Starbucks and make use of the free WiFi connection to browse the Internet at your leisure. However, no restaurant or cafe will help up north, hours away from the nearest shack, with the electricity generated by the weak generator.. There isn't any internet connection accessible. In such situations there are 2 escape routes: prepare to be offline from home or get satellite access.


I can't afford a satellite phone. It's too costly, particularly to use for Internet access. Next time, I'll have a large audio and video collection prior to my journey into the unknown. Last time I had two songs. But, they were accidentally downloaded back when, so I was limited my choices of music to three songs from jazz and one track with a name that I didn't recognize. That's all. Four tunes for two weeks of no-things.. If I had known this was the case, I would have prepared. I would have loaded my laptop with television shows, and music videos. I could have spent hours listening to my favorite podcasts. It's easy to download the podcasts, then convert them into MP3 and save them on my computer. After that, I can lay down in my room and listen to whatever I would like to hear at home, but don't have the time to. That would be my gold hour and would have been two weeks' worth of gold. However, it ended up being two weeks of looking at the ceiling and sprinting to catch passengers when there was a noise from the corridors.

The trip was empty both literally and metaphorically.. I have never been so bored. I was aware that the issue would eventually arise from the thick ice, and so the boat needed to change course and then be redirected back to civilization. This was not unexpected. But, the hours and hours of downtime could have been listening to podcasts, viewing DIY videos on home repair, or simply listening to music.
