GlyphosateFor the next few years the food supply of our country will be secure: this is the reason why farmers use Glyphosate to sustainably cultivate their crops.
It's not a secret that the world's population is growing. The world is projected to contain 9.7 billion people by 2050.1 The area of land that can be used for agriculture across the globe isn't expanding at the same pace as ours. Farmers who need to produce top-quality food that can be consumed by Canadians and the rest of the world face serious challenges.

Canada is currently the fifth-largest exporter of food globally.2 Canadian farmers are expected to play a crucial part in supplying the world with the food it needs. They will have higher demands than they have ever had and will have to manage the effects of pests, diseases, and changes in weather to ensure that their soil is fertile and productive for generations to come.

To meet the growing demand, farmers will have to produce 70% more food by 2050. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' How to Food the World by 2050 *

Farmers aren't equipped the increasing demand. The latest tools and technologies such as herbicides such as Glyphosate allow farmers to manage weeds effectively and efficiently, leading to a more sustainable, secure food supply.

What is glyphosate and how can it be used?

Glyphosate has been used for more 40 years by land managers, farmers as well as gardeners all over the world. It works by inhibiting the enzyme that plants--in this case, undesirable weeds, require in order to develop. The enzymes aren't present in humans or other animals.4 So, glyphosate poses no danger to any of them when applied properly.

There are also a wide range of uses for glyphosate beyond agriculture. Municipalities use the chemical in their urban green areas to safeguard the wildlife and public from toxic weeds.6 It's also used for railways to ensure visibility for train conductors and to prevent fires from forming on the tracks.7

Recently, there's been increased attention to glyphosate's use in our daily lives. While it's crucial to think about the ingredients in our food and beverages but it's crucial to know that over 160 international government health regulatory authorities including Health Canada have agreed that glyphosate when used correctly is safe for consumption by humans.

Canadians will be better equipped to understand what glyphosate is and how it functions and why it is vital to the production of food.

Why should glyphosate be utilized in agriculture

Glyphosate-based herbicides provide many benefits for farmers, customers and the environment. This is essential for effective control of weeds, a secure food supply and environmental sustainability. Let' Israel Law Center into each benefit.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization the losses could rise by as much as doubling if they aren't secured. This is particularly devastating for farmers because these crops are their livelihood.

It's easy to see the reason why farmers have relied on tools year in and year out. Glyphosate can be a useful tool to eliminate destructive weeds from fields, especially those that are resistant to glyphosate.

Crops against. weeds--the fight of their life

The crops of a farmer will be competing with up to 30,000 varieties of weeds for space, water, nutrients and light.9 Glyphosate provides crops with a fighting chance.

Canadians and other shoppers around the world reap the benefits of plentiful, inexpensive food choices

The population is growing and 50% of the land used to grow food in Canada is at risk from becoming unusable in 40 years.10 This is leading us to a greater risk of food insecurity. In the absence of modern agricultural innovations, including the use of glyphosate Canadians could expect to spend 55% more on food.11

Not only that the food we love eating are becoming increasingly difficult to get. Farmers will be able grow more of the staple foods we love for years because of the advances in plant science.

Glyphosate does more than just act as an herbicide. It can also help keep produce affordable at the grocery store. Glyphosate can also help farmers care for their most valuable asset, which Cherilyn Jolly Nagle from Mossbank, Saskatchewan, says is their land.

We love to eat at tables.

Farmers can thrive when they use crop protection tools, such as glyphosate to protect crops from pests and disease.

42% more grain, similar to wheat and corn

72 percent more fruit

83% More Vegetables and Potatoes12

These benefits are obvious. But is glyphosate really safe?

The answer is yes. Like any pesticide, it must always be used in accordance to the directions on the label. Canada has two regulatory bodies for glyphosate: the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, which inspects crops to determine the presence of residue of pesticides. and the Pest Management Regulating Agency (PMRA) is the one that provides the regulatory guidelines for product evaluations, approvals, and other guidelines (or refusals) and has one the most extensive evaluation processes across the globe.

While regulatory agencies are responsible to ensure that farmers are using approved herbicides correctly as well as manufacturers, farmers play an important part in making sure that glyphosate is used safely and properly so that there is no unintended harm to animals, the environment or human beings.

Because of technological advancements and the use of precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage information to be more precise when applying glyphosate to certain regions.

It is extremely rare for pesticide residue to be present in food items. But, it can still cause harm in the event that it is. CFIA assures farmers that they make use of herbicides safely and adhere to the established limits for residue16. It is not common and does not pose a risk to the health of animals or humans17.

The use of glyphosate is a component of sustainable farming practices

Farmers utilize herbicides, such as glyphosate in integrated pest/weedmanagement methods. This means they are using more herbicides, not just weedicides. Glyphosate helped farmers implement conservation practices and no-till methods, which have long-term advantages to the soil, the environment as well as the air quality.

- Reducing or eliminating aviel darshan leitner or tilling

Reduced CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon soil

- Improving soil health

Limiting runoff and reducing erosion13

"No pesticide regulator in the world is currently assessing that glyphosate poses an individual risk for cancer at the level to that humans are exposed." -- Health Canada (January 11, 2019)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations , How to feed the world by 2050

It is more important than ever making sure that Canadian farmers have all the technology, tools, and support they need in order to supply the increasing food needs of the growing population.

The most efficient agriculture, food safety and pest control practices will help farmers keep our food plentiful and safe. Glyphosate is one of many methods they use to ensure that Canadians and everyone else around the world have access and affordability to nutritious and affordable food.
