Farmers cannot meet this growing demand alone. The latest tools and technologies such as herbicides such as Glyphosate, enable farmers to control weeds efficiently and accurately, which results in an increased sustainable and secure supply of food.

What exactly is glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a potent, non-selective herbicide used by land managers, gardeners, farmers and others around the world for over 40+ years. It does this by blocking the enzyme that plants--in this case, unwanted weeds--need in order to develop. Glyphosate is completely safe for animals and people if employed correctly.

Glyphosate can also be used in other fields other in addition to agriculture. It is also utilized in municipal green spaces to shield animals from poisonous weeds.6 The glyphosate can also be used on railways for visibility and fire prevention.

Recently, attention has been focused on glyphosate, its use in the modern world and the way it's used. In Canada Glyphosate usage is regulated by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) which checks crops for residues from pesticides and ensures that farmers are using it in a safe manner, and the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) that provides the regulatory guidelines for product submission evaluations, as well as approvals (or rejections)--and has one of the largest evaluation procedures throughout the world.14

In addition to ensuring herbicides approved by the FDA are used correctly by farmers, regulatory agencies will also ensure that an appropriate and safe usage of glyphosate is followed by producers, farmers and animals to ensure that there is no risk caused to the natural environment or animals.

Thanks to technology advancements and the use precision agriculture, farmers are able to leverage data to be more precise when applying glyphosate to specific zones.

Glyphosate residues are rarely found in food products. It can cause damage in the event that it is found to be within certain levels. It is extremely rare to detect glyphosate on food.

Glyphosate use as part of sustainable farming practices

Farmers employ herbicides such as glyphosate as part of an integrated pest and weed control strategy. In other words, they do more than herbicides to control plants. Glyphosate has allowed farmers to implement conservation practices and no-till methods which provide long-term benefits for the soil, the environment and the air.

This is the best time than ever for Canadian farmers to have access to the tools, technology and assistance required to meet the growing food supply needs.

A good mix of food safety, agricultural and pest management methods will help farmers will continue to safeguard the food we eat. Glyphosate, however isn't the only tool they'll use to ensure that Canadians can access affordable, nutritious food for the next generation.
