In 1848, a carpenter named James Marshall discovered gold while building a sawmill upriver from Sutter’s Fort in Sacramento, California. At the time, Marshall was working for John Sutter, a man who had built a booming trading post in Sacramento. While Marshall was working one day, he reached into the river, alongside which he was building the mill. When he scooped up a handful of sand from the river, he found the sand filled with gold flakes.
Sutter tried to convince Marshall and all his other workers to keep the gold discovery a secret. Despite Sutter’s plea for secrecy, word of the gold got out and the gold rush was on.
By 1849, the gold rush was in full swing. Sacramento, California filled with people from all over the United States (and, indeed, the world) who were looking to get rich.
