Polyurethanes - An overview
Polyurethanes are all around us, playing an important role in many industries - from shipbuilding to footwear, construction to cars. They seem in an astonishing variety of forms, an assortment that is continuously increasing.

Rigid reboundable foam is one of the best practical thermal insulation materials, used in applications ranging from buildings towards the modest domestic refrigerator. Comfortable and durable mattresses and car and domestic seating are made of flexible foam. Items such as shoe soles, sports equipment, car bumpers and soft front ends are produced from different forms of polyurethanes elastomers. And many of us count on polyurethanes - elastic threads of the material are located in underwear as well as other clothing.



All polyurethanes depend on the exothermic result of polyisocyanates with polyol molecules, containing hydroxyl groups. Relatively a few basic isocyanates and a range o polyols of various molecular weights and functionalities are used to produce the whole spectrum of polyurethanes materials. Additionally other chemical reactions of isocyanates are used to modify or extend the plethora of isocyanate based parts.
