Amy Mitchell, director of journalism research study at Pew Research Center More Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents trust than suspect most of the 30 outlets in the study, however the reverse is true amongst Republicans and GOP leaners.</p>

With today's huge and fractured media landscape, our objective was not to do anything like a census. Rather, we desired to select a variety of news outlets with substantial audiences across various platform types.</p>

<p class="p__3">Most of the outlets we studied were part of a similar research study we published in 2014, which enabled us to track whether partisans' trust in them altered in time. One group not included here are wire services like The Associated Press and Reuters. While those companies certainly produce a terrific offer of original reporting, our study is not an assessment of news brands, but an analysis of outlets Americans turn to for news and the trust levels of those outlets.</p>

<p class="p__4">We also thought about things like web traffic, topic focus and actions to open-ended study questions about people's main sources for political news. Social network websites as a source for political news were asked about separately and will be a part of a future analysis. How did you measure Americans' trust and suspect in these outlets? We initially asked our survey participants whether they had become aware of each of the 30 outlets.</p>
