Southeastern Lubber
Lubber Grasshoppers


One of the biggest and slowest moving insects, lubbers can obtain 3 inches (7.5 cm) in length at maturity, and cause a lot of damage to an orchid collection. Various types are discovered in different geographical regions of the United States: eastern lubbers (Romalea guttata, found from main North Carolina west through southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas to Texas and throughout Florida), horse lubbers (Taeniopoda eques, belonging to Texas and Arizona, down into Mexico), plains lubbers (Brachystola magna, many typically found on the prairies of the western part of the United States and Mexico) and southeastern lubbers (Romalea microptera, which spread out from North Carolina to Florida, west to Louisiana and northeast to Tennessee).

Description
There is some variation amongst the different types, all are quite large and flightless as insects go, with women attaining greater length at maturity than males. Distinctively colored and patterned, the immature ones have different pigmentation from their adult equivalents. All share the chitinous exoskeleton typical of grasshoppers that assists protect them from predators and avoid dehydration.

Eastern lubbers are flightless, although not wingless. (6 cm) to more than 3 inches (8 cm) in length.

Unlike some of their less athletic cousins, horse lubbers have long hind legs that enable them to cover distances of up to 20 times their own length in a single dive. These lubbers are black at maturity, with black-and-orange-striped antennae and yellow markings, and obtain a length of 2 1/2 inches (6.4 cm).

Flightless plains lubbers are also efficient in jumping from numerous inches to several feet utilizing their oversized hind legs. Their bodies are reddish brown in color, marked with greenish brown. The tiniest of the lubbers, this grasshopper is still fairly big, reaching up to 1? inches (4 cm) in length as a grownup.

Life Cycle
After mating, lubbers deposit caches of around 25 to 50 eggs, depending upon the types, in the ground throughout the summer. These eggs overwinter underground and start to hatch out from mid-March to June, depending on the region. In warmer areas, such as the southeastern United States, the hatching is earlier, while for species such as the plains lubbers in the western parts of the country, later on spring is the expected arrival time for the young. The wingless nymphs (immature insects) crawl up out of the soil in groups and start their search for food. The young lubbers will molt their exoskeletons five times at approximately 15-day intervals prior to maturating, when they settle to reproduce and begin the cycle once again.

Environment and Feeding
Each type of lubber has its favored plant or plants on which it feeds in its natural environment, all are fairly catholic eaters and, offered the opportunity, will normally trigger damage to a large range of plant. Young lubbers normally travel in big numbers, swarming and devouring plant material as they go. Southeastern lubbers regular roadsides, field edges and gardens, noshing on ornamentals, veggies and even citrus leaves.

Protective Attributes
Lubbers have at their disposal a variety of reasonably unpalatable methods of defending themselves versus threats from other creatures.

The intense pigmentation and pattern on a lubber's shell is an aposematic, or warning, pattern to predators that they are unpalatable to downright toxic. Lubbers consume and assimilate substances in the plants they consume that, although harmless to human beings and the lubbers themselves, are toxic to many predators. These chemicals may kill smaller sized creatures such as birds or leave larger animals quite ill after ingesting a lubber.

The lubbers are capable of producing a toxic foam while making a loud hissing noise when threatened if their color pattern is insufficient to alert off a prospective predator. In addition, like a lot of grasshoppers, they can also throw up a dark brown liquid (typically called tobacco spit) as a defense.


Lubber grownups are powerful and colorful in appearance.
Controls
There are a number of insecticides hazardous to grasshoppers that are registered for usage on vegetables, fruits and ornamentals, such as Cygon. If control of the young lubbers on host plants for which the insecticides are approved is the objective, chemical control is a choice.

They can be handpicked from a preferred plant or netted due to the fact that most types are relatively slow moving and all are safe to human beings. Different orchid growers suggest their own preferred lubber-control weapons, including a brick, shoe, broom or even the broad side of a machete, however squashing them does appear to be the favored technique.
