Meski bernanama Kepiting api, hewan ini amat menyerupai kura-kura besar dengan tempurung yang dipenuhi dengan batu permata.
Hewan ini mempunyai 6 kaki seperti kepiting. Matanya berwarna hitam dan berkulit abu-abu. Ditempat asalnya, Fiji, sebentang pantai telah di ubah menjadi cagar alam untuk melindunginya.
Bukan hanya padi para muggle yang mungkin tergoda dengan tempurungnya yang berharga, melainkan juga dari para penyihir jahat yang memanfaatkan tempurungnya sebagai kuali yang bernilai tinggi.
Walaupun demikian, Kepiting Api mempunyai mekanisme pertahanan diri. Bila diserang, hewan ini akan menembakkan lidah api dari ekornya.
Dengan surat izin khusus, Kepiting Api ini bisa di ekspor sebagai hewan peliharaan. Ada 3 jenis berlian yang terlihat dari tempurungnya. yaitu, Ruby, Sapphire dan Emerald.
