Mentalism is an act that demonstrates its practitioners, referred to as mentalists, seem to have highly skilled mental or intuitive abilities. Hypnosis, telepathy, clairvoyance, divination, precognition mediumship, psychokinesis mind control, memory feats, deduction and rapid mathematics are just a few of the abilities that mentalists exhibit during their performances.

Mentalists are actors who perform a stage performance which utilizes "ordinary conjuring methods," natural human capabilities (i.e. understanding body language, advanced intuition, subliminal communication and emotional intelligence) as well as an in-depth knowledge of the basic principles of human psychology or other behavioral disciplines to appear to utilize supernatural or psychic forces, but actually are performed using "ordinary conjuring techniques."


The term "mentalism" is typically regarded as a subset of magic. If performed by a stage magician, it's also known as mentalism. However, many mentalists who are professionals today may usually differentiate their work from magicians by claiming that their craft is based on a specific collection of skills.


Mentalists are, however claim to create mental and imaginative events and explore psychology, suggestion and influence to alter reality. They may also be called psychic entertainers, although non-mentalist performers such as psychic reading and bizarrists fall under this designation.


Many mentalists avoid performing "traditional" magic tricks because they feel that doing so can blur the line between stage magic and mentalism. In doing so, they connect mentalism too strongly with theatrical illusionist trickery, according to many mentalists. Mentalists are not all considered to be magicians, and claim that their style of art is distinct from magic.


Audience members can reach varied conclusions and beliefs about mentalist performers' claims regarding their various psychic abilities such as photographic memory, being the "human calculator," power of suggestion, NLP, or other claimed talents. Misdirection can appeal to the senses and a spectators' experience of the world in a distinct way than stage magic's misdirection techniques.


Magicians frequently ask their spectators to surrender their disbelief to ignore the laws of nature, and let their imaginations play with the various tricks they offer. They acknowledge they are tricksters from the beginning, and they know that their audience is aware that everything is an illusion.


Everyone knows that the magician can't really accomplish the impossible feats he has demonstrated, such as sawing the body in half, and then putting them back together without harm, but that kind of confidence does not usually be present in the minds of those who watch the mentalist.


Some magicians combine mental performance with magic tricks. For example, a mind-reading trick could involve the magical movement of two distinct objects.
