<p class="p__0">The back cover of Once Upon A Time in Vietnam by Jerry Neren, (Pearl Editions, 104 pp., $14. 95, paper), a great book of poetry, informs us that the author "served in the United States armed forces." No information are offered about his service. This little book, the winner of the 2010 Pearl Poetry Prize., features a stunning and awful cover by Marilyn Johnson that shows a stag in the forest with an arrow through his neck.</p>

<p class="p__1">Neren's Beginning tell us that "the story tracks a young guy from the time he is prepared into the Army right out of college; suffers a total mental breakdown throughout his trip of fight task; continues to have a hard time with his psychological injury up to his return home; and lastly discovers a method to reconstruct his destroyed life." The reader encounters "soldiers poisoned by Representative Orange" in the first area of the book, set in Fundamental Training, which gave me a shock.</p>

<p class="p__2">The expression utilized to describe the victims of Agent Orange hit me hard: "their insides feasted on like plankton by a whale." I understand direct how that feels. Jerry Neren The poet develops two characters: Eugene and Dominick, classical music-loving friends who graduate from college, are prepared, and are sent out together to Vietnam.</p>

<p class="p__3">Eugene goes bananas. He then suffers in VA care from age 24 to age 41, that chunk of his life lost forever. The story of Eugene and Dominick is informed in 4 sections: The Beginning covers bootcamp. Part One, "The Battle Front," handles how the killing is done in Vietnam.</p>

<p class="p__4">Part Three briefly shows us the "New World." This gorgeous, lyrical narrative poem touches much of the exact same bases that numerous memoirs and novels and short stories do, including Agent Orange and the taking of human ears. But in I Found This Interesting get "oceans of Agent Orange" and "lockets made from human ears." We discover the story of Eugene, who, like a chameleon, "handled the color of Vietnam: the color of insanity." If I were still teaching college course on the Vietnam War, I would make Once Upon a Time in Vietnam a needed text.</p>
