#1- A long time ago there was a kind and generous man named John Chapman. He loved animals and loved to plant seeds for settlers and pioneers so they wouldn't starve. John planted seeds along forests, roadways, and even near rivers, traveling from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania for about 50 years. He stayed ahead of settlers and pioneers planting seeds where they would settle as he moved west. He would get seeds for free from cider mills and keep them in leather bags. He also wore apple sacks for clothing and gave nice clothes to settlers.

Not only did he plant seeds for them, he would also make friends with them as well. He made friends with Indian tribes, and even learned some of their languages. In fact, many festivals were named after him, and children loved him and listened to his stories. He was kind to everyone. When he was invited for a meal, he wouldn't ea until the entire family had enough food to eat. He was even generous to animals as well! He brought a horse that was going to be put to sleep and gave the horse to someone needy to keep his promise to treat the horse kindly.
