Glue trap seals 28-day search in north Raleigh for venomous zebra cobra.
Following many hours of consultation and preparation by Animal Control officers, a venomous zebra cobra was captured on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, ending an eventful 48-hour period that attracted attention throughout North Carolina.

It was taken to a safer location to be fully cleaned after it was guided into the bucket and guided out.

The WRAL cameras captured the striped snake crawling out of the siding of a Sandringham Drive house, onto the front porch. As it lifted its head, the hood was visible.

When officers confirmed it was the snake, they walked back from the camera crew before moving in to try and capture it.

Early Tuesday, a 911 call from that home sparked the search.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Despite hours of consultation and preparation of law enforcement and animal control officers, a glue trap ultimately trapped a venomous zebra cobra on a north Raleigh porch Wednesday night, bowing out a nearly 48-hour ordeal that gained national attention.

Cobras were placed inside red buckets and taken to a safe location so the glue could be removed completely from their bodies.

WRAL's cameras caught the snake the previous day crawling onto the porch of a house on Sandringham Drive. When it lifted its head to look around, the top of its hood was visible.

Camera crews were moved back after the officers confirmed it was the snake before attempting to catch it.

A neighbor, Joan Nelson, said she is relieved the ordeal is over.

It makes me feel much safer, she said. After this experience, I feel like I can go outside, walk on the deck, or even go for a jog. The snake seems to have a lot of problems, though.

There is a striped snake in the yard of a north Raleigh neighborhood where a zebra cobra has gone missing.

Zebra cobras are fast, can spit up to nine feet, and can spit at high speeds, making even morning dog walks dangerous. The African Snakebite Institute cites the snake as extremely dangerous. The venom can cause the nervous system to shut down.

Someone who is bitten by the poison of a cobra would feel pain, swelling, gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea. Following a heavy fever and breathing problems, you might lose your breath and may die.

Dr. Salina Locke, a veterinarian at Avian and Exotic Animal Care, treats all kinds of animals.

The species of cobras that are found in this area do not bite. They spray their venom more often -- they're very accurate, she said.

Due to its dangers, Locke advises against keeping this snake as a pet.

Sleeping is when most bites occur. The effects of being bitten may last for years, according to research.

It has been reported that police searched a home on 6917 Chamonix Place, near the location where the cobra was last spotted.

There were four visits by police to that house in March in connection with an animal issue. Zebra cobras were seen on a porch a half mile away on Monday and Tuesday, after this was initially reported.

The records of the county show Rebecca and Keith Gifford live at the address. His Facebook account shows several pictures of snakes he claims are owned by his son, Christopher, according to the account.

The TikTok account of Christopher Gifford has over 460000 followers. On one of his posts, he claims to own a 7-foot zebra cobra.
