Review of Trent Et Quarante on Natural Theology
Trent Et Quarante is the origin of the term Trent. It is a delightful treatise about biblical naturalism in origination of its title. The book is a response against the naturalism espoused by the Reformation and seventeenth century church fathers who rejected the doctrine of instant salvation by grace alone. Et Quarante argues through this book that grace can be a work done by free will, while faith can be a work done by predestination. This means that we choose to believe what we want.

The book's main part consists of three chapters that are divided into three parts. Each section deals with one or more of the three main theologies of original sin, grace or merit. Parts one to three focus on the doctrines of original sin. This book contains a number illuminating conversations among its contributors. Some are surprising candid about how their religious beliefs and practices match up. Some conversations are quite poignant, given the subject matter.

Parts two through three focus primarily on the doctrine of merit. Et Quarante makes a compelling argument against the idea that original sin exists. He claims that those who hold this view are misunderstanding what it means. Et Quarante, John Locke and other co-writers believe that the doctrine on original sin is what gives rise to the idea merit. Locke believes that original sin binds a person to all the bad consequences of their behavior. Therefore, according to Et Quarante and his co-writers, if one were to follow Locke's view on merit, one would inevitably become a sinner by the end of one's life.

Et Quarante argues that there is more to merit. We must also remember that we are saved not because we have committed sins but because we have been born in the likeness and image of God. There is therefore nothing outside of our union with God. This is Et Quarante’s metaphysics of original Sin and the core of his message. In this way, he presents salvation as a mystery and thus it is something not easy to understand.

Et Quarante also tells the story of David, Bathsheba and the Absorption daughters. David had rejected the proposal of Bathsheba the daughter of Esdragel for divorce because she was unfaithful. David was so enamored of Bathsheba that David was willing to marry him, but not for reasons of purity. He chose to marry Bathsheba to undo the harm he had caused. The metaphysics of original sin made it impossible for David to consummate their marriage as he was bound by the Law of Moses and the commandments of God.

Et Quarante draws heavily upon the work of Robert Edward Grant, Hugh Walker and Anthony Coady to explain this philosophy of merit/demerit. However, he admits that he owes a debt to earlier works. Trent Et. Quarante's interest in medieval naturaltheology is evident in his commentary on the works Basil, Origen and Augustine. All of these writers support the doctrines of creation and divine providence. Many passages echo these arguments. The book contains many references to biblical scripture and other interpretive details.

This book is one of my favorite books on natural theology. Trent Et Quarante presents a clear and concise explanation of this important subject. This guide will be a valuable resource for anyone looking to defend the faith.
