Some animals can eat only plants(herbivores), others eat only meat(carnivores), and some eat both(omnivores)
Energy moves through the environment in steps like a chain consisting of in order (plant, small animal, medium animal, large animal) the last does not always happen
Another way is when 2+ animals in the same area eat the same thing that would be called a food chain.
