I don’t think this is a terrible move, and I didn’t give it a terrible grade, but I do think this is a very disappointing hire. Not hiring an offensive head coach just doesn’t make any sense at all. I do think Brandon Staley is a great defensive coordinator, and what he’s done for the Rams defense speaks for itself. However, this is a team that knows they have their franchise QB in Justin Herbert, and they had the opportunity to pair him with a great offensive mind. Brian Daboll, who is in my opinion the best head coaching candidate this year, was right there, and they passed on him. Sure, they’ll be just fine with Staley, but they could’ve been great with Daboll, or another great offensive minded coach. I don’t think a revolving door at OC is what’s best for Herbert. If you want him to be an elite QB, you give him the best chance to succeed. I don’t think that’s what the Chargers did. This would make more sense if the Chargers had an awful culture or awful defense, but I don’t think either is the case. The defense wasn’t great last year, but injuries were a big reason for that. They already have talent on that side of the ball. While the culture may not be great, it’s far from a terrible one that needs to be fixed. Staley will be better than Anthony Lynn, no doubt about that, but it’s not good enough to contend for a Super Bowl anytime soon.
