Obviously there’s nothing exciting about this hire, but I do think this is the right way to go for Detroit, and that’s why it gets a solid grade from me. The Detroit Lions are not a team that intends to compete for a Super Bowl anytime soon, and they haven’t done so in years. The culture is terrible, the organization is terrible, and it’s an extremely undesirable HC opening. It’s not like they could appeal to the top head coaching candidates. Also, this is a team where it actually makes sense to try to establish a culture and a higher floor. In my opinion, Dan Campbell was brought in to do just that, and will do a good job of that. The Saints haven’t had great TEs as of late, but there’s no denying that the effort level of their TEs is through the roof. Guys like Adam Trautman, Josh Hill and even Taysom Hill are phenomenal blockers, and Dan Campbell deserves some credit for that. What the Lions need is this kind of effort and motivation throughout the entire roster, and that’s exactly what they weren’t getting before. While it may not be the flashiest hire, and doesn’t make the Lions much better, it’s what they need if they want to compete for a Super Bowl in the future.
