When I first heard the news, I thought this was a terrible hiring. Then I did some research, and I honestly don’t think it was bad. Keep in mind no one wanted this job for obvious reasons. David Culley’s resume is very unimpressive. He’s not bringing anything to the table schematically. As a WR/QB coach over the last 20 years, nothing he’s done has warranted a head coaching job. However, he’s also been an assistant head coach over that time, and he’s known as someone who can build a great culture. While he’s done nothing impressive schematically, it’s hard to argue against that. Assuming he won’t be calling plays at all, I don’t mind this hiring all that much. Obviously there were much better candidates, but again, no one wanted this job. The Texans organization is a complete mess right now and they could use someone like this, especially if Deshaun Watson is gone. Even with Watson, they aren’t competing for a playoff spot anytime soon. We’ll see what happens, but if Culley does fix the culture in Houston, this move will pay off.
