I think this is a great move by the Falcons. In my opinion, Arthur Smith was the best head coaching candidate not named Brian Daboll, and hiring an offensive minded coach was definitely the right way to go. There are criticisms that Smith “relies too much on Derrick Henry”, but I don’t think that’s the case. The Titans had the 7th most efficient passing offense in each of the past two seasons. A fair criticism of Smith is that he can’t adjust when forced off his gameplan. He is, however, a young HC, and he should get better at this over time. Packers HC Matt LaFleur had the same issue, and he’s gotten much better over time. What I love about Arthur Smith is that he makes things easier on QBs by scheming up easy reads off play action. He was able to turn Ryan Tannehill from a draft bust to a top ten QB. This will make things much easier for Matt Ryan, who was extremely successful under this scheme, but most importantly, he’ll most definitely help develop whichever quarterback the Falcons decide to draft, and that’s the biggest reason why I love this move.
