Theme
A theme is the meaning or message in a story. Themes help give a story its purpose and meaning by connecting the events. The theme isn’t directly stated in the text, but it becomes evident when you look for the recurring ideas.
Fictional stories typically have one main theme and a few minor themes. The author weaves the setting, characters, and sequence of events around the main theme. The main theme is the core of the story and can be implied in a few words or even in a sentence.
Some themes are known as universal themes because they appear in numerous works of fiction. Universal themes are about common experiences in life. Readers from different cultures and generations can relate to them. Some examples of universal themes include the quest for knowledge, coming of age, love and betrayal, loyalty and friendship, and the brevity of beauty.
Historical Elements
An author’s work is influenced by historical and cultural events. Here are some ways you can find connections between a story and the author’s heritage:
Read biographical information about the author.
Note the details in the story that show historical events or cultural influences.
Make inferences from details to explain an author’s viewpoint or purpose for writing.
What is the “big idea” in the story? That idea will lead you to the story’s theme.
What do the characters do or say that relate to the big idea? Characters play an important role in relaying the theme. Pay attention to how they grow throughout a story.
What is the setting? The setting for a story can help paint a picture that supports the theme.
How is the conflict of the plot resolved? The resolution will reveal what lesson the characters learn.
What is the title? The title of a story often provides clues about its theme.
