~Living organisms are subdivided into 5 major kingdoms
~5 kingdoms= the Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
~The Monera= <about 10,000 species> only one cell, no nucleus, thought to be very distantly related to other lifeforoms because they are missing many of the organelles or parts commonly found in other cells, bacteria is commonly placed in this kingdom, considered by many scientists= oldest life forms on earth
~The Protista= <about 250,000> unicellular life forms- have nucleus, main difference between protists and monera- protists are more complex have nucleus; appear to be both plant and animal, like plants:they are green- can create own food, like animals: have moving body parts, able to move around their environments.
~The Fungi= <about 100,000> variety of different fungi, many years= believed fungi were plants/ today we know fungi are different from plants in important ways, unlike plants: cannot make their own food, differences in basic make up and chemistry of their cells. Fungi= mushrooms, microspic fungus, truffles and many more
~The Plantae= <about 250,000> all plants you see each day, most are multicellular-consist of many cells-plants: trees, grass, flowers, and some types of algae, use light from Sun to produce their own food- allows them to grow almost everywhere as long as there is enough water, get green color from chlorophyll which is found inside their cells, use chlorophyll to collect energy from sunlight, then use energy to create food, plants create the food we need to eat and the oxygen we need to breathe- very important to almost ever other living thing
~The Animalia= <about 1,000,000> multi-cellular, cells come together, forming tissues, organ and organ systems, that help sustain the life of the animal, come in many shapes and sizes and can be found all over world, can't make own food, animals have to have other food sources to survive, more animal species than all the other kingdoms combined, very wide variety of species
