there may be an even more blatant sign that Angeli is no friend to antifascists: his much-photographed bare torso is covered in symbols that have long been used by the white supremacist movement. Given his penchant for showing up to protests shirtless, face-painted, and sporting a horned helmet like some kind of racist Party City Viking who took a wrong turn and ended up at Burning Man, Angeli’s many tattoos are often on full display, including his large trio of Odinist symbols. He has a mjolnir, or Thor’s Hammer, on his stomach, an image of Yggdrasil, or Tree of Life, etched around his nipple, and most significantly, placed right above his heart, a valknut, or “knot of the slain,” an old Norse runic symbol turned recognized hate symbol that is popular among white supremacists. In addition, the mjolnir has become a symbol of identity among self-proclaimed “heathens” (which is often code for white supremacy-aligned pagans).

Joın or Die flag: Two other flags often associated with the American extreme right were also held aloft in the halls of the Capitol. The Gadsden flag was adopted by American colonists struggling against their English rulers in the lead-up to the American Revolution. The "Join or Die" flag features a design drawn by Benjamin Franklin meant to show how important it was for the colonies (later states) to come together. The far right has appropriated these symbols of American independence. Today, the “Join or Die” flag is associated with white supremacist movements, especially the Three Percenters militia. This paramilitary group is considered an Antigovernment Movement by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They defend the right to carry weapons.
Many of the rioters referred to the Revolutionary War, shouting out “1776” while storming the Capitol building. This is a reference to the Declaration of Independence, signed on this date.

Yggdrasill: Old Norse Mimameidr, in Norse mythology, the world tree, a giant ash supporting the universe. One of its roots extended into Niflheim, the underworld; another into Jötunheim, land of the giants; and the third into Asgard, home of the gods. At its base were three wells: Urdarbrunnr (Well of Fate), from which the tree was watered by the Norns (the Fates); Hvergelmir (Roaring Kettle), in which dwelt Nidhogg, the monster that gnawed at the tree’s roots; and Mímisbrunnr (Mimir’s Well), source of wisdom, for the waters of which Odin sacrificed an eye. After Ragnarök (Doomsday), the world tree, though badly shaken, was to be the source of new life.
Thor's hammer:(Mjollnir, heathen/heathenry) The band's name is a reference to the weapon of the old Norse God Thor (Old Icelandic Þórr). The Thor's Hammer symbol, often worn on a necklace, became a symbol of Heathen identity when Christianity started to become dominant in the Scandinavia of the late Heathen period.

Mjollnir, Old Norse Mjöllnir, in Norse mythology, the hammer of the thunder god, Thor, and the symbol of his power. Forged by dwarfs, the hammer never failed Thor; he used it as a weapon to crash down on the heads of giants and as an instrument to hallow people and things. Mjollnir was stolen by the giant Thrym, who asked as ransom the hand of the goddess Freyja. When Freyja refused to go to Thrym, Thor masqueraded as her and succeeded in grabbing the hammer, which had been brought out to consecrate him as Thrym’s bride. Thor then slaughtered Thrym and the other giants with the hammer.

Amulet of Thor's hammer (Mjolnir) worn by a Swedish practioner of Forn Sed and member of Forn Sed Sweden (former Swedish Asatru Assembly).
The hammer is a commercial copy of an archaeological find from Skåne, Sweden. The original hammer is of silver with filigree ornamentation and was found in an unknown place in Skåne and did belong to a collecton owned by the baron Claes Kurck, but was donated to the Historical Museum in Stockholm in the year 1895. Unreliable sources says that the hammer was found in Kabbarp near Staffanstorp in Skåne, Sweden.

In the sense that Thor protected people against chaos by consecrating them with Mjölnir and he guarded the cosmos against the giants by crushing them with it, the Hammer of Thor is considered a Norse symbol of protection. This tradition was carried on even after many Vikings converted to Christianity: Mjölnir amulets were worn by Christian Vikings along with crosses on their necks. We must remember, though, that it is a critical element of the way that the Norse sagas were constructed that duality and dichotomy were always an integral element of the narrative. The Hammer of Thor, for all its destructive power and primary role as a weapon of war, is also a tool of rejuvenation and regeneration, and the catalyst for the rebirth of the world after Ragnarok.
In fact, Viking warriors used to wear Thor’s Hammer as an amulet during battle to provide protection.

Crann Bethadh, Celtic life of tree symbol
When the Irish Celts formed a new community, they planted a tree right at its center, and it was called the ‘Crann Bethadh’, meaning the Tree of Life.
As the hub of the community, the tree’s shady branches were the place where important meetings were held.In times of warfare, the Celts believed that if they cut down the tree of their enemies, it would ensure their victory over them. They regarded the root system of the tree as a physical doorway, penetrating the earth to the spiritual world beyond. They saw the Tree of Life as representing the three stages of life: birth, death and reincarnation in another life.

The Tree of Life was called crann bethadh by the Ancient Celts, who believed that it had magical powers. Celtic people honored the Tree of Life by leaving one big tree in the middle of their fields when they cleared their land. Underneath the branches of this tree, the Celts held gatherings and appointed their chieftains. The tree was able to provide shelter, food, and medicine, leading the Celts to believe that it had enough power to care for all life. Chopping down the tree was considered a serious crime meaning that the biggest triumph one would be able to achieve over their enemy was to chop down their Tree of Life. The Celtic Tree of Life symbol has many different interpretations. The Tree of Life is a representation harmony and balance in nature. The Tree of Life, to the Celts, symbolized strength, a long life, and wisdom. The tree also represents rebirth, as it will lose its leaves during the fall season, hibernate throughout the winter, and will be reborn again once spring arrives. The Celts also believed that they actually came from trees, and considered them magical, living beings. Trees were said to guard the land and acted as a doorway into the spirit world.
The Tree of Life connects the lower and upper worlds as its roots grow far down while its branches reach high. The tree trunk connects both of these worlds to the Earth’s plane. It was with this connection of worlds, that it was said that people are able communicate with the gods in the heavens using the Tree of Life.

Valknut Symbol:
First found on old Norse stone carvings The Valknut is also called “Hrungnir’s heart,” for the giant Hrungnir of the Eddas and is best knovvn as the Valknut, or”knot of the slain.” It has been found on stone carvings vvith funerary motifs, as is thought to signify the afterlife. The Valknut’s three interlocking shapes and nine points are sometimes used to represent the rebirth, pregnancy, and cycles of reincarnation. The nine points are also suggestive of the Nine Worlds. Their intervvoven shape suggests also the interrelatedness of the three realms of earth, hel, and the heavens, and the nine domains they encompass.

The name Valknut is not a traditional Viking name, but a modern Norwegian title given to the symbol. It combines the words for slain warrior, “valr”, and knot “knut”, to mean “knot of slain warriors”. This name was chosen as the Valknut appears to be associated with the dead, and with Odin, the god of war and the dead.
the Valknut should be associated with Valhalla, the warrior afterlife where all Vikings hoped to find themselves. The association with not just death, but Odin, points in this direction. I also think that this may have been a symbol that marked the dead as living in Valhalla. But for this purpose, it may also have been a magical symbol used as part of Seidr magic.
The Vikings believed that no matter how noble a life you lived, or how courageous a warrior you were, you had to die in battle to be taken to Valhalla, otherwise, you found yourself in another of the Norse afterlives. To that end, it was not unusual for the Vikings to stab those dying of illness, or place a sword in their hand after death, in order to trick Odin and his Valkyries into thinking that the warrior had died in battle. Today the Valknut has become associated with modern Germanic paganism.
