Short-Answer Question 3:
a) Spanish colonists were Catholic while the New England colonists tended to be Christian (Puritan).
b) Both the Spanish and New English colonists based their entire systems on the idea of religion. In general, both groups also tended to persecute those who did not convert to their religion.
c) An example for the Spanish colonists was their use of the encomienda system which served to force Native Americans into labor that did not comply with their religious conversion missions.

Long Essay Question (Section II Question 3):
The Civil War resulted in major economic changes for it in that it resulted in the end of slavery and the Naval/trade blockage of the Southern ports by the North. Previously, the South's economy depended heavily on agriculture. As a result, plantations began to spring up and Native Americans were the primary labor force on these. However, when the Native American labor force was hit with smallpox and eventually became incapable of carrying out the needs, the South turned to a cheaper alternative: slave labor. Since then, slave labor had been a central part of the South's economy and essentially supported their entire economic systems. During the Civil War, however, the North (Union) used their control over the Navy to block supply routes to the South (Confederacy). Additionally, after the Civil War, slavery was eventually abolished with the passage of the 13th amendment, thus entirely changing the dynamic of the Southern economy. Because the South had come to rely to heavily on slave labor, the abolition of this labor was devastating and posed a major change to their economy.
