Anaerobic digestion
The process by which microorganisms convert biodegradable materials such as human waste to biofuel forms. Methanogens are the specific organisms used in the conversion of waste to methane gas and carbon dioxide.
Carbon cycle
The biogeochemical exchanges that ultimately result in the rotation of all existing carbon atoms (such as the carbon dioxide / oxygen exchange that occurs during photosynthesis in terrestrial plants and marine biota). The cycle includes carbon movement between the biosphere, atmosphere, oceans, and geosphere.
Gasification
The conversion of a carbon-based solid (e.g., wood) into carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane gases. These products generally are known as syngas, used as a fuel or in the manufacture of chemicals such as the propellant dimethyl ether.
Lignocellulosic materials
Any materials made from wood; when gasified, the components are used to manufacture various types of biosynthetic natural gas (syngas).
Pathogen
A disease-causing organism.
