Finally, ethanol production has been widely criticized for its effects on human well-being. As land is diverted to corn or sugarcane production, fewer acres are available for growing food. Therefore, food prices rise. The billions of people worldwide who are already malnourished find themselves able to buy less food, and some are pushed into starvation. In early 2008, food prices were rising so quickly in both the United States and in poor countries, where many families already spent more than half their income on food, that food riots broke out in over a dozen developing nations. Most analysts attributed the crisis at least partly to the pressure placed on grain supplies by ethanol production.
