Ballroom dance is a style of dance that has a broad reach across the dance world. First origins go back to the 1500’s, and yet, the style still holds a huge importance today. It is used for performance and entertainment, as well as in social context.
First originating as a dance for status, ballroom dancing was only for people with wealth and fame. One of the requirements was to own a room large enough to hold many dancing pairs. The oldest recorded instance of ballroom dancing goes back to French renaissance. It spread to the rest of Europe, but held significant importance in England, after the creation of the waltz.
Ballroom dancing spread its influence across all corners of the world, both figuratively and literally. The influence of ballroom dancing can be seen in latin dances, such as the samba and cha-cha. It can also be seen in the Spanish “pasodoble”. Not to mention the United State’s competitive waltz, tango, and foxtrot scene. All of which are forms of ballroom dance.
