Use the ‘Bloom’s Taxonomy’ resource again (from the course General Resource page), which shows the next two levels of thinking skills:
Applying and Analyzing. In a similar way to the last time your student accessed the Thinking Skills task, use a familiar text to work on the Analyzing section. This section is about the student being able to use the text to consider other possible outcomes in the story that may have happened and why; being able to discuss outcomes that could not have happened; finding a part or parts in the story that we consider a ‘turning point’, i.e. a point which everything changed; a dramatic event that affected the character(s), etc. Ask your student to focus on the questions:
•Which events could not have happened?
•What do you see as other possible outcomes and why?
•What was the turning point in the story and what makes you say this?
These questions should be explored through discussion about the text. Your student may want to discuss more than one text at this point, and you should encourage him / her to compare, e.g. the turning points in both texts; other possible outcomes in both texts. Ask your student to write a letter to the author of the text or texts they have focused on today, telling them about today’s lesson. They should tell them what they have discussed about their story and how they have analyzed it.
