2-2-4-5 Peak Detector Circuit
Square, triangular, saw-tooth and pulse waves are typical examples of non-sinusoidal wave forms. A conventional ac voltmeter cannot be used to measure the ms value of the pure sine wave. One possible solution for this problem is to measure the peak values of the non-sinusoidal wave forms. Fig.2-2-6(a) shows a peak detector that measures the positive peak values of the input.
EC0222 Electronic Circuits Laboratory manual
During the positive half-cycle of Via, the output of the op-amp drives DI on charging capacitor C to the positive peak value Vp of the input voltage Vin Thus when D1 is forward biased, the op-amp acts as a voltage follower. On the other hand, during the negative half-cycle of the V, the diode DI is reverse biased, and the voltage across C is retained. The only discharge path for C is through R since the input bias current is negligible. For proper operation of the circuit, the charging time constant (CR) and the discharge time constant (CR) must satisfy the following conditions
CRa << T/10 and CRI 210T
where R, is the forward resistance of the diode, R is the load resistor and T is the time period of the input waveform V. The wave form for a square wave input is shown in fig. 2-2-6(b)
For a very small R, a voltage follower is connected between C and R. The diode D2 conducts during the negative half-cycle of Vin, thus preventing the op-amp from going into saturation
