marvin (very good fit, but no python experience and only 2 spots ://)

4-6. ocean physics and ecology (data analysis)

numerical methods for macroeconomists (LaTeX!!)
By working on a textbook for economics students, I hope to learn about the process of writing educational texts, especially one that is a novelty. I have experience with TeX and its variants from courses that I have taken as well as applications in writing documents. I hope to contribute with fast typing speed and thus quick transcribing of the mathematical formulas present in the text. While writing the book, I also hope to learn some economic theory (albeit probably too advanced). Learning a mathematical language through MATLAB will also help me to be a helpful aid to other research projects in the future, especially those that involve applications of mathematics, and by some extension, those that require data analysis. I also enjoy interdisciplinary activities, so combining my interests in social science (economics) and computer science (programming and scripting languages) will be fulfilling for me. I hope to advance my knowledge of the applications of the amazing language that is TeX and its variants. I have already been exposed to some of the unique features, and receiving more practice will only add to that repitoire.
3-4. astronomical research w/ dark energy survey (low income, python, physics, astronomy)

can we formalize user addiction as a security property (programming, privacy, hacking)
When I was first exploring course options to fill up my last credit unit, I stumbled upon NETS 150. At first, I thought it would be just another CIS elective. However, I soon discovered that applying concepts I learned in other courses to real-life topics, such as social networks and sociology, was much more interesting than I had initially thought. I love using computer science to solve problems that other fields have produced, such as the field of sociology and the influences that technology has had on modern societies. Being able to model things in a very theoretical way is something fulfilling. The topic in this project is a good extension of those ideas and is something I always wanted to explore deeper. By participating in this interdisciplinary study on technology, I hope to learn more about the addicting entertainment applications that I use every day and the engagement algorithms behind them. Furthermore, I am comfortable with theoretical computer science, and by extension mathematics and logic. Thus, I aim to deepen my understanding of these topics and apply them to technological problems in society. As a person fascinated by the internet and networks in general, I also hope to contribute by asking some questions that might have been unanswered or that come from a slightly different perspective. Outside of this project, I plan to use the knowledge I gain to educate people around me about the consequences and results of using these technologies in our everyday lives.

1. specification and verification for functional and imperative programs (cis 120)
While many people who took CIS 120 detested the OCaml portion of the course, I actually enjoyed programming in a completely foreign paradigm. Throughout the course, when the professors mentioned future opportunities for people who enjoyed functional programming, I listened intently for other opportunities I had to explore my niche interest. Through this project, I hope to explore the mysteries behind functional programming and why it is uncommon, and the science behind certain styles and models of programming languages. Furthermore, as a naturally curious person, I began to wonder about the applications of different paradigms, so one of my goals is to expand my knowledge of the theory and linguistics aspects of computer science. In terms of contribution, I aim to assist by being an energetic and flexible research assistant. I am able to perform many different tasks at a quick pace (e.g. typing), allowing me to complete tedious tasks. I am also interested in the inner-workings and theory of programming languages (not commonly taught in-depth), and working practically on a project that traverses those aspects would be extremely educational and helpful in my undergraduate career and future research projects. Additionally, I enjoy the proofs and logic behind computer science, like those seen in CIS 160 and CIS 121. In research, I hope to further my knowledge of proof techniques and practical applications of proofs that would help me not only in future courses but also in teaching and in being more knowledgeable to answer potential students' questions.
