A little review to begin the day:
What conditions existed that allowed the Harlem Renaissance to happen? {context}
Migration outside of South to North & from Caribbean
Decline in opinion of America by immigrants
Pluralism supported a more accepting society
Voting rights

Identify some of the causes of the Great Depression:
The corruption of banks/Wall Street led to a loss in confidence
The recovery of Europe after WWI
Purchasing of industrial products stagnated
Excesses of laissez faire
Poverty in farm-oriented regions

Hoover's response could be described as _ineffective_ because _he supported to some extent laissez faire, so he was very reluctant to institute any direct response_.

What is the message: FDR in the first New Deal tried several policies to end the Depression.
What is the historical context that adds meaning: His trying of legislation, such as the creation of new federal agencies and to regulate the economy, acts to supply housing and jobs and to help farmers.

Evaluate the extent to which FDR addressed the social, political, and economic issues facing the United States during the Great Depression.

Sample: Another piece of evidence that supports my argument { what appears in your topic sentence }that the industrial revolution had a positive effect on the working class of Europe is the fact that the working classes won the right to vote. Because governments recognized that workers were not happy with the conditions of the factories they expanded the vote to more men in an attempt to avoid a violent overthrow of the system. If men had the vote they would be less likely to engage in revolutionary activity because they possessed the power to change the system peacefully through elections.

Another piece of evidence that supports my argument that FDR’s response to the Depression was overall ineffective is that the National Recovery Association failed. Roosevelt wanted business leaders to cooperate to set standards on output, prices, and working conditions, but this became corrupted with the extractive interests of the business leaders, who instead of helping recover the economy wanted to increase their profits.

Why did unions succeed in the 1930’s; what changed that allowed them to grow in membership and political power?
The Depression helped the labor movement because the trust in those with a lot of wealth who played a part in the irresponsibility of the economy plummeted. Roosevelt’s administration tried to assist labor unions largely because of the blame on industries; the federal and local governments less often intervened to forcefully stop strikes now.

Evaluate the extent to which the New Deal was successful in alleviating the problems of the Great Depression.
Although the first New Deal did see the federal government trying to create jobs for the millions of unemployed Americans through infrastructure construction, his Agricultural Adjustment Act actually caused sharecroppers and tenants to be evicted, and a lot of his policies were invalidated by the Supreme Court concerned with the president using too much power. Therefore, the New Deal was not totally successful in alleviating the problems of the Great Depression.

Document 1

Document 2
Topic sentence = 2 usage statements = 2 HIPP statements:

Document 1 shows how the New Deal wasn’t completely successful because employment didn’t recover to the previous levels it was at before the Depression. The agencies he created to build infrastructure didn’t all last- the Civilian Conservation Corps was dissolved due to a belief it was too costly and adversity to supplying supposedly dependent-creating aid.

Document 2 shows how FDR’s New Deal wasn’t altogether successful because it shows a stamp from the NRA, which failed in recovering the economy due to self-interests dominating it. It allowed certain businesses who were involved in it to profit at the expense of others.
