In the line "If you listened hard enough you could hear the sand hiss as it slipped away", Winton uses auditory imagery to evoke a sense of danger in the sand, by making the sand 'hiss' whilst it slips away. The slope keeps sliding downwards, making the climb upwards seem like they aren't moving forwards, and eventually straddle the 'knife-edge' which references to the sharpness and danger of a knife . The hissing of the sand is akin to a snake, a symbol of danger which hides itself as strikes when unsuspecting. The 'snake' slipping away could mean that it is preparing to attack, or hiding in wait. These techniques are metonymy, connotations and auditory imagery. They show the reader that the sand dune which Frank is on is dangerous and could 'attack' at any time.
