Dear Diary,
Dear Diary,
Sorry, I couldn't write earlier; this month has been just overwhelmingly crazy! I turned twelve last Monday and Jem has been provoking me non-stop about acting more like a girl.
I was looking forward to Dill returning to Maycomb this year as well. But, I got a letter from him saying he'll be unable to join us this year.
Also, Atticus won't be home much because his legislation is back in session and he will need to travel to the state capital every other day. I asked if I could join him but; he said it would be boring for me.
We also got to go to a coloured church with Calpernia! It was an enjoyable experience how everyone was so welcoming, but I'm sad that they don't have enough money to function suitably.
When we came home, we found Aunt Alexandra waiting for us. Honestly, I don't like her very much because she always brags about being better than everyone. She told me that her intent to stay here was so I would have a female influence in my life. All the ladies come over to our house with cake and tea when Aunt Alexandra comes over, I don't quite understand why, she says it's because she is valued as she's grown up and lived her whole life in one house which I find silly, because if that were true wouldn't the Eule’s be the most respected in town?
Atticus's role as a lawyer made us kids whisper around town. Anywhere we went, people looked at us and started to whisper.
The following weekend Aunt Alexandra doesn't let us go back to negro church. .................................................................................................................................
Also, on a warm summer evening, the sheriff came to our home and, Atticus answered, we couldn't tell what happened but, Atticus just took his hat and left, we followed him and saw him reading a newspaper in front of the jail, soon when Jem said we should leave. A group of 4 men came out of their cars and told Atticus to leave in 15 seconds or something bad would happen to him. We ran to Atticus and, he told us to leave but we refused, I then began to look around and, to my surprise, I recognized Mr. Cunningham, Walter Cunninghams' father. I knew there had to be something done about this so I simply began to tell him all the help my father has done for him and I could tell he began to feel ashamed for what he was doing. Once he told the mob to disperse, we heard a voice from above, as we looked up we saw Mr. Underwood who had a double-barrel shotgun, he said he had us covered the whole time!
Finally, the trial started last week; people from all over the county rushed over to the courthouse. Although I wasn't allowed to go, I went there only to notice quite a few people, Miss Crawford to Mr. Dolphus. Jem told me he was a wealthy eccentric who owns the land on a riverbank and lives near the county line, but he is involved with a black woman and has mulatto children. I don't understand why people think that's wrong, but the only person that didn't show up was Miss Maudie. I asked Jem why she didn't show up and he simply said she refuses to go, saying that watching someone on trial for his life is like attending a Roman carnival. As the door opened we waited for enough people to enter and then Dill, Jem and I made our move. Because we waited for too long, we were only able to sit in the coloured section, and as much as the people of Maycomb dislike the colours, I've seen that they are some of the kindest people in the county.
Well, the trial is about to begin so i’ll be back soon !
