-5 required elements are Chemical Inventory, Written Program, Labels, Material Safety Data Sheets, and Training
-pictograms:
--health hazard (person with 6 lines in middle): carcinogens
--skull and crossbones: toxic
--ex calmation point:irritants and narcotic effects
-corrosion
-flame
-flame over circle: oxidizers
-gas cylinder: gases under pressure
--exploding bomb

Types of Chemical Hazards:
--physical hazards like chemicals (any substance that can cause a physical or health hazard) and procedure; Types:
-flammable, oxidizers, reactive (undergoes chemical reaction by itself or w/ other materials), pyrophoric (react in contact with air), explosives, combustible dust (solid materials composed of particles that are fire hazards, compressed gases

Health hazards can cause cancer or are toxic and can cause illness or death
-carcinogens cause cancer
-specific target organ toxicity
-germ cell mutation
-reproductive health hazard
-acute toxicity (ill effects that follow one or multiple exposures)
-sensitizer (allergic reactions)
-corrosives
-irritants
-aspiration (entry of liquid or solid directly into mouth or nose)
-simple ashphyxiants (displaces oxygen)

Preventing Harm:
-ability for substance to cause harm depends on dose, duration of exposure, toxicity, and route of entry into the body
-inhalation (most common), skin absorption, ingestion, or injection
-read labels (OSHA requires that chemicals are labels with product identifier, pictorams, and supllier), data sheets
--signal word ("danger" or "warning")
--hazard statement
-safety data sheets: employers must provide access to employees
