Contract Details: 4 years, $160M ($40M per year) + $27M signing bonus, $111M in guarantees
This contract extension starts in 2022, keeps Deshaun Watson in Houston through 2025, and makes him the second highest paid quarterback in the league. This is a good signing. It may seem like a lot of money, but it won’t by 2022. Also, the Texans did not pay Watson only for what he is now, but also what he will become. Signing Deshaun Watson to an extension was a priority all season long, and the Texans got it done. Watson, after three seasons, has established himself as an elite QB talent and has brought the Texans to the playoffs twice. He is by far the biggest reason for the success of the Texans. In the next few seasons, Watson could potentially become a top 3 QB, and might even outplay this contract. According to Spotrac, Watson’s calculated market value was $39.5M, and he got around that much. The Texans won’t have any trouble affording this contract. This is a rare good move by Bill O’Brien.

Last season, Deshaun Watson started in 15 out of 16 games and was 333/495 for 3852 yards, 26 TDs and 12 picks. He had a 67.3 CMP%, a 2.4 INT%, 7.8 Y/A, 256.8 yards per game, and a 98.0 QB rating. Watson also had 82 carries for 413 rushing yards and 7 TDs, as well as 5.0 yards per attempt, 7.1 yards per scramble, and 27.5 yards per game. Watson led the league in game winning drives, and was top five in big time throws and money throws. PFF gave Watson a very good grade of 81.3.
