Contract Details: 4 years, $80.1M ($20.025M per year) + $50M guaranteed
This contract extension starts in 2021, keeps Keenan Allen in LA through 2024, and makes him the second highest paid wide receiver in the league. Keenan Allen brings a lot to the table for the Chargers as one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, and with a young QB, the Chargers had to sign him to an extension. However, the contract they gave him is a slight overpay. Keenan Allen is making around the same money per year as Amari Cooper, who is younger and better. Allen will be 33 at the end of his deal. He’s also making more money than Michael Thomas and Tyreek Hill. A deal closer to the $17M to $18M range would be better. While the Chargers won’t 100% be able to afford this contract, that would’ve happened anyways. They have Hunter Henry and Melvin Ingram due up in 2021, and can only afford to pay one. It’s far from a terrible contract, but it’s also far from perfect.

Last season, Keenan Allen started in all 16 games and had 104 receptions on 149 targets for 1199 yards and 6 TDs. He had 74.9 yards per game, 11.5 yards per reception, 8.0 yards per target, 2.25 yards per route ran, a 69.8% catch rate, and a 4.7% drop rate. Allen also had 3.6 yards after catch per reception and an 84.8 passer rating when targeted. He had the 11th best catchable target rate. PFF gave him a very good grade of 80.8.
