The most prominent idea in the film is the social heirarchy. The upper class, rich people live above ground, while the workers, who are depicted very slave-like, live underground. This can be seen as the rich are above them in social status, while also literally living above them, in much better conditions than those below. The workers are seen as dirty and tired, their movements into and out of the factories in unison as if they were slaves, trained to do it, while the rich and clean and comfortable, living in fresh air and beauty. Freder, the main character, explores how poorly they are treated and what their living conditions are. This is something the upper class pushed out of their minds, thinking they are better than them because they have more money.
