Spanish and English Policies differed in terms of the settlement. Spanish developed the Encomienda System, in which they forced Natives to work under harsh conditions for the promise of "protection" and Christianization, creating a mixed racial society. While the English did not establish a similar system and required land for tobacco production. English was less inclined to interact with the Natives and although they did unfortunately use some Natives for indentured servants, the English were more concerned with dislocating the Natives.




English relied on Native Americans for trade and survival. Eventually, the gain for greed led to forcing the Native Americans out of the land and where they used a different system and needed the land for the tobacco.

The Spanish, with the goal of converting the Native Americans, developed the encomienda system in which they forced Natives to work under harsh conditions for the promise of "protection" and Christianization. Due to the amount of interaction between the Spanish, the Natives, Africans, and other ethnicities, a racial caste system also developed. People of Spanish and Native blood were called mestizos and became a large and permanent portion of the population. The English were less inclined to interact with the Natives and although they did unfortunately use some Natives for indentured servants, the English were more concerned with dislocating the Natives and pushing into their land.
