Contract Details: 6 years, $85M ($14.166M per year) + $37.5M guaranteed
This contract extension starts in 2021, keeps Taylor Decker in Detroit through 2026, and makes Decker the 8th highest paid left tackle in the league. Signing Taylor Decker to a contract extension was something the Lions had to do, and they signed him to a great contract. Decker is one of the best young tackles in the league and is an above average player at a very valuable position, and the Lions decided to go with less money and more term. Decker is currently 26 years old, and he will be 32 on the last year of his deal. That’s a bit risky. However, getting him for less money is huge. Decker is making less money than Nate Solder, D.J. Humphries and Dion Dawkins. He’s already underpaid. Decker has also been improving each year, and there’s a chance he outperforms this contract even more. The Lions don’t have a ton of cap space, so this makes a lot of sense. The Lions have made a lot of questionable moves this offseason, but this was a great signing.
GRADE: A
Last season, Taylor Decker started in 15 games and allowed 7 sacks on 1017 snaps. He also had 10 penalties. He had a rough start to the season, but he played like an elite tackle in the final 8 games of the season. According to PFF, he’s earned an above-average grade on true pass sets and has avoided negatively graded run blocks at an above-average rate. PFF gave him a solid grade of 75.5.
