Contract Details: 4 years, $48M ($12M per year)
This contract extension keeps Joe Mixon in Cincinnati until 2024, and makes him the 5th highest paid player at his position. The Cincinnati Bengals are proof that having a good running back means nothing if you have a terrible o-line, which the Bengals do. Instead of investing money into the o-line to fix what is probably the worst unit in the league right now, they paid their running back. Joe Mixon is very good and is a top ten back, but that doesn’t matter if you have an offensive line this bad. As good as Joe Mixon is, I don’t think he’s even worth what they gave him, although it’s not a terrible contract. As with most running back signings, I don’t love this move.
GRADE: C-
Last season, Joe Mixon started in 15 out of 16 games (653 snaps) and 278 carries for 1137 yards and 5 TDs. He had 4.1 yards per attempt and 71.1 yards per game. Mixon did this with the 26th best run blocking o-line. In the passing game, Mixon had 35 receptions on 45 targets for 287 yards and 3 TDs. He had 8.2 yards per reception, 9.5 yards after catch per reception, 6.4 yards per target, 17.9 yards per game, and a 2.2% drop rate. Mixon also led the league in evaded tackles, was 4th in juke rate, and 8th in yards created per touch. PFF gave him a decent grade of 75.3.
