A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information, or data. From the initial coining of the word 'computer' in 1613 to the latest Chromebook, tablet, or smart phone, the last few hundred years have seen many milestones in the history of computing.

Did you know that the computer was born not for entertainment or email but out of a need to solve a serious number-crunching crisis? One of the things it was created for was to be able to store, retrieve, and process data. Today a computer can be used to type documents and spreadsheets, send email, play games, and browse the Web, create presentations, and videos.

Why do I have to learn this and how does it relate to me?
According to the Centre for Education in Science and Technology,

"Technology and design lessons allow children and teenagers to be creative while also developing new skills and grasping an understanding of how things work. Technology education can provide students with a wealth of information and knowledge, which they can then use in the future to pursue a related career or simply as a subject of interest and intrigue. Technology is an increasingly significant part of the society children are growing up in today, so it is only natural that they should learn about the appliances and systems they rely on on a daily basis. Technology, like science, also inspires students to think and form questions based on what they see and learn; this leads them to want to gain further knowledge and understanding which they are them able to pass onto others." Technology surrounds us on a daily basis and the jobs of the future will most likely involve elements of computing; therefore, possessing a good understanding of a wide range of technology skills are important. Did you know that just 10 years ago only 25 percent of licensed preschools had computers? Now almost every preschool has a computer. That means that the average sixth grader did not have technology in his or her preschool, but his/her preschool sibling does. That just shows you how much technology is changing education and in turn, society.
