Chapter Seven -
1- The smell of the library air is different than any place else because the books make a unique scent that will "make you confused".

2- According to Bud, the phrase "Haven't you heard?" usually means that the next information given is shocking or something that will "make you run out of the room."

3- I think that Bud felt hopeless after hearing that Mrs Hill moved away, because back at the Amos house Bud believed that Mrs Hill may be his last hope to finding his father and finding a good home.

4- The rising action is what happens between the exposition and the climax.


Chapter Eight -
1- Hooperville is the nickname of a community of cheaply-built houses where the poor could settle down without the police intervening.

2- The man meant that President Hoover worked so hard to provide these homes that it would be rude if they did not call every community like Hooverville by that name.

3- I think Bud told Deza Malone all about his mother because he kept those thoughts and feelings about her to himself for so long and he decided to just let it out when he was asked about it.

4- Deza Malone compares all the "poor kids on the road" to dust in the wind. She means that she doesn't have much sympathy for them because they all have similar stories and are all alike, just like dust.

5- Bud's trick to fall asleep is to recite repetitive words as animals, for he remembered how he always forced himself to sleep when he was younger when his mother told him stories.

6- The policemen were attempting to keep the men off of the train because they felt that the poor were taking away their transportation and the ability to "feed their kids."
