Lazarus and Hughes have very different views on America. Lazarus, who grew up wealthy in New York City views America as a place of equal opportunity, the equality of opportunity for everyone regardless of race or religion. Lazarus believed that even if you came from horrid conditions in a different country, that those who have longed for freedom will be greeted with offers and opportunity in America. Hughes had much different views. While Lazarus talks about how alive the American Dream is, Hughes mentions its failure. Hughes a black man voicing how the United States never fulfilled its promises of justice and liberty for all. Hughes wrote this during the Great Depression, a rough time period for Americans everywhere. Although, Hughes continues to explain how the United States portrayed racism and injustice such as the experience of Native Americans and African Americans.
