The way I understood the connection between the "universe is a machine" story and the nature of thinking as metaphor (understanding one thing through another) was that it gets at a very human, very desperate attempt at structuring the disorderly universe that constantly evades perfect metaphorical connections. I looked back to the quote about materialist philosophy: "The only materialist—be he poet, teacher, scientist, politician, or statesman—is the man who gets lost in his material without a gathering metaphor to throw it into shape and order. He is the lost soul." I interpreted this as a critique of strict materialism (only matter exists, ignoring the role of human consciousness in defining and structuring matter), whereby materialists ignore the fundamental procedures of thinking that are constitutive of our human essence (the process of thinking one thing through another).
