Early Life
Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delawre , Ohio, on October 4, 1822. to Ruther Yahes, Jr, and his mother Sophia Brichard. He was nicknamed "Rud", just like his father and grandfather. 5 years before he was born, his parents fled new england due to the poor economy and settled in Delaware Ohio. Rutherford was born 10 weeks weeks after his father death who passed away in July of 1822. Also before he was born, his mother had a daughter pass away as well.
He was often sick as an infant and grew into better health by the time he was two years old. When Rud was 2 years old, his older brother died while ice-skating. Because he was often sick, he was not allowed to play outside the family until he was seven years old. At nine, he was allowed to play rougher sports. So he grew close to his sister, Fanny, during his childhood.

Childhood
His mother thought rud and fanny to read and write. He briefly attended a newly opened public school that had mean school-master, Daniel Granger. Granger would flog students and threaten to throw them through the walls. Rudd even recalled that Granger threw a knife, purposely missing, at a student jut for whispering. He studied hard and later attended a private school in Delaware and then the Norwalk Seminary in Ohio. Because he was a hard worker, his uncle later payed for private school for Rud and his sister.

College & Young Adulthood
Rutherford attended Kenyon College in Gabier Ohio where he became the Valedictorian, of his class in 1842. A Valedictorian is a student who is usually one of the highest ranking student in a graduating class, who delivers a speech at the graduation. After graduation, he studied extremely hard in a law office in Columbus, Ohio, before entering the Harvard Law School where he earned a bachelors of law.

He made a name for himself practicing law in Cincinnati where he was successful in defending clients from going to the jail. He continued working in law, and later met his future wife, Lucy Webb, who was also from Delaware. After Lucy graduated from college in 1850, Rutherford proposed to her and they took two years in getting married.
