Notes

Crazy day. Here's what happened:
I got to campus and read what I needed to. Then I had Mina's movement practice class. We practiced water-body. It was great. then I walked over to the Sawn garage and talked with professor J. It was a long, approximately 45 minute long conversation that was so fruitful I wish, as always, that I recorded it. j is the only professor who asks me questions that really make me think. They always surprise me. for example they asked me if I've always realized that I'm a different person when i speak Russian. We talked about art and making and money and advocating for yourself and process process process, and my work, and critique. I want to ask them if student ever lead their own critiques, if they ever instigate the conversation or if the professor does. I feel like we are put at the steering wheel, but it's kind of hard to drive when you just drove and danced and spoke and sang and fell and sounded and yawned and observed.

Anyways, I then went to rehearse with Mina. Mina told em she wanted to bring in other people, specifically Zo, which made me so happy. I am really excited for them and for him. I then worked on my score, noticing energy three-dimensionally moving. We spent an hour, even more. It was much more freeing with this kind of water-body everything is moving addition. And then was Levi's class. What a great great class. I did my sounding practice, and Emely told me that she has never heard those sounds ever. That was very moving and validating to hear. It was so fun to do this practice with Mina and Ulyana. And with Stephanie over Zoom. I just did what I practiced, this kind of internal stammering urgently, repeating viciously, expanding and contracting through exasperated breath. And listening was so much part of it. Also I was very inspired by Emely's study. Love calling them study and not performances btw. Emely's clothes rippled. They had rhythmic percussion going on from the ground into their soul, and they suspended it. They found pulses, they played, and it morphed and shifted. That is what I saw. We then moved into a singing improvisation practice: singing in a made-up language in the style of opera. Oh my goodness. This was the most fun thing ever. And as I keep saying, I do this all the freaking time. So me and Ulyana went, and even though their microphone crackled for a while, we kept going! So fun, so fun.

During the 7 minute break we had in class, I checked my phone and read an email from Buddy in my notification. Chuck Richard died last Sunday, suddenly, at his home.

I loved Chuck, I really liked him a lot. I will write to him, and to his family. I ended up speaking about him for the next portion of class, and playing with third person. After class, Ulyana and I had dinner, during which time I realized what I was going to do for Workshop: my practice map but invite people to duet with me. And so I did, but I'll write all about that later. Still unpacking.
