i think it was fairly common throughout history that defeated armies and/or peoples would be made slaves by the conquering group
interesting that soldier slaves seemed to be able to retire and not be considered a slave anymore (seems quick in relation to, say, american slavery)
interesting that there was no official "citizenship"
I found several parts of the Kemp reading to be very interesting. The idea that the "Egyptian identity" was more related to cultural aspects, such as language (both speaking and writing) and dress, than to national origin or race was intriguing to me. This concept suggests (as Kemp also notes) that there wasn't really an official "citizenship" recognized by the Egyptians or the government. This seems to have made it much easier for outside groups who immigrated or were brought to Egypt to assimilate into the culture and become "Egyptian". This also relates to the points Kemp made about
