Your play review is a 1-2 page critique of the production you saw, which discusses, analyzes, and evaluates the overall performance. Feel free to be tough on the performance. Honest critique is much better than pandering, but don’t be mean for the sake of being mean. The review must be typed, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and should be free from grammatical and spelling errors.
Include the following in your review:
Paragraph 1: A brief (4-5 sentences max) summary of the play, explaining what the story was about. Include only the important points. I have most likely seen the show, so I don’t need all the details!
Paragraph 2: Your opinion of the work of the actors, director and script.
Paragraph 3: Explain who your favorite performers were and why.
Paragraph 4: Your opinion of the lighting, scenic, costume, make-up and audio design.
Paragraph 5: Your overall opinion of the production.
You will be graded on the following:
Evidence: Does the essay cite justification for the author’s opinion
Terminology: Did the author use appropriate and robust performance vocabulary
Connection to Learning: Did the author connect the performance to their own technique, knowledge base, and/or potential growth
Structure and conventions: Is the paper properly formatted for a critique, in a professional tone, and free from mistakes
Content: Did the author address all aspects of the performance
Be sure to explain what was done well and what wasn’t, what worked and what didn’t, and be sure to explain WHY! Be specific and give examples as evidence of what you are saying.
Good Example: “The lighting was effective because it enhanced the mood and mystery of the story.”
Bad Example: “I liked the play because it was good.”
If you were on a running crew and therefore didn’t get to see the production from the audience, discuss as much of it as you can, and give a detailed explanation of what your job was and what it was like to do your job. Include what you learned from being on your crew.
